New Century: The Cartographer’s Handbook [Part 2 of 4] The First Emergence of the Wendigo – Account: Maggie Strother – Account: Private Henry Jackson – Account: Sergeant Bo Travis – Account: James Gregory – Account: Katherine Holloway New Century is an alternate history sci-fi set in America in the years following the civil war. Henry Jackson was represented utilizing the image of Union Army Private Emory Eugene, Bo Travis by Confederate soldier Marmaduke Marshall and James Gregory by Lewis Thornton Powell. Powell is the most well-known as he was one of the four conspirators subsequently hanged for their part in the plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. The artwork used to depict the horrible fictional occurrences in Mississippi are of course based on horrible real events from that period. What I didn’t show (aside from one chilling photograph) is how in our reality that stretched on well into the 20th Century. The imagery at the end to show the wendigo plague affecting New York City utilized published depictions of the 1870s Orange Riots and the 1860s gang warfare of the Five Points mobs. You can see at one point the Irish are portrayed as being savage and ape-like. At the time they along with many other cultures introduced to the societal melting pot were seen as a genuine threat to the American status quo. Katherine Holloway was represented utilizing the image of C.P. Roberts. Very little is known and recorded about Mrs Roberts but her melancholy air combined with her strong features provided the perfect image for Katherine. Most definitely inspired by Gone With the Wind, this is what might have happened to Scarlett O’Hara in the world of New Century. See if you can spot the...

The Cartographer’s Handbook [Additional for 1883]

This is the extra handbook material that was released March 1st 1883 after James and Abigail had their encounter at Brier Hill during the events of Secret Rooms. If you’ve heard the 1883 edition before then you’ll be familiar with all of this. If not, it should prove rather revealing. Director Thomas W. Digital Gonzo 159: The Making of The Cartographer’s Handbook [Part 2]

Part 2 of the in-depth character study. Find out secrets behind the names, the motivations of General Curtis, President Grant and Director Arlington, the nerve-wracking prospect of including real life historical figures alongside fictional characters alongside more voice direction and some rather hilarious outtakes. My guests again are  are Laureta Sela: voice of Barbara Gordon in The Killing Joke and in this production, Maggie Strother, Carmen Santos and Captain Annie Oakley. Matt Wardle, voice of Doctor Julius Kaufman and Sargeant Bo Travis. Maureen Foley, the voice of Tabitha Chorley. Spencer Leeb, the voice of Lawton Sadler and Samuel Tudor. Sharon Shaw, the voice of Katherine Holloway and Harriet Blaine as well as the book’s editor. And of course there’s myself, the voice of Thomas W. Arligton, General of the armies Nathaniel Curtis, President Ulysses S. Grant, the book’s writer and the audio producer and editor. Joining me for a further discussion on why sci-fi and the supernatural often don’t mix is Matt Dillon of Geekplanet. If you like what he has to say and want to check out his work, Traveler’s Duty is available in the Kindle store. Digital Gonzo 159: The Making of The Cartographer’s Handbook [Part 1]

I would say listen to the audio drama first, but I have a feeling that if more people listen to this enthusiastic and in-depth character discussion in the traditional Gonzo round-table style then The Cartographer’s Handbook will inevitably get a lot more talkative fans. So my advice is listen to this, spoilers and all, until you are truly tantalized, and champing at the bit to get stuck in to the audio drama itself. Honestly and seriously folks this book series is incredibly important and something of a milestone achievement in my life. In these first few weeks and months of its existence, how it reaches the rest of the world depends entirely on you. Your word of mouth, your Amazon reviews. I’m basing this campaign on trust. Joining me in the discussion are Laureta Sela: voice of Barbara Gordon in The Killing Joke and in this production, Maggie Strother, Carmen Santos and Captain Annie Oakley. In this episode we look at the first nine characters in the book, in chronological order. Arlington we’ll be keeping for the very end of the second part, since his is the most deep and complex character. This one gets pretty heavy too with thorny cultural, prejudicial gender and racial issues confronted. You can obtain the audio drama by going to Gonzo Planet and downloading the MP3 zipped folder. Once again, payment via donations gratefully appreciated. For those unfamiliar with this, here’s a quick synopsis since we don’t introduce it for the first time in the show: Ostensibly written by Thomas W. Arlington, director of the newly formed National Intelligence Agency, this book is given to scouts of the Reunified States Military, setting out to travel an America beset since 1872 by a lethal new plague. The infected regress to an aggressive, feral state and it is up to what remains of a shattered government, operating out of the reclaimed Washington DC, to re-establish contact and form a total army of the people, if they are to stand a chance of retaking their land. This is the introduction to an ongoing series named New Century.  http://traffic.libsyn.com/gonzogaming/159._The_Making_of_The_Cartogrophers_Handbook_Part_1.mp3 Podcast: Play in new window |...
