Digital Drift 28: Guardians of the Galaxy
This is the tenth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe podcasts. We talk at length about the transition from obscure Marvel comic to breakout success, how the characters differ across the mediums taking many detours into the depiction of female and black characters in comic book movies, the inspired soundtrack, the hilarious, often touching performances, the detail-filled worlds and of course the vibrant, fun-filled rollicking space adventure now finally earning recognition. This is also the first of a trilogy of unrelated movie reviews all celebrating some of the best aspects of the human spirit. Next week it’s The Lego Movie, followed by The Iron Giant, which also makes this a Chris Pratt and Vin Diesel appreciation trio. This is because episode 30 is my 400th podcast (give or take a few dozen, Digital Cowboys ran for 209 episodes and Digital Gonzo for 161). Joining Sharon and I are Jerome McIntosh of the GameBurst podcast, Mike Hearn from the webcomic Walter the Wicked, from the Digital Drift community Rose Lynn and longtime Guardians comic fan Doctor Lorin Grieve. James Batchelor also makes a special guest appearance as The Henchman Agent, returning from his stint on the James Bond and Batman podcasts. Each has an epic running time. The discussion for all three went super-in depth for what might be perceived as kids movies by anyone who doesn’t listen to this show, and while we kept things clean for the other two it does get dark for Guardians at times so be aware of that going in. We brought in multiple voices across the board for a broader range of perspectives and experience and I’ve gone all out on the music and clips. Listen out for my suggestions for Awesome Mix Vol. 2. A Marvel No-Prize to anyone who can give us the complete track listing for these hypothetical, thematically consistent tracks on the forum. Digital Drift 9: Captain America: The Winter Soldier
This is the ninth of the Avengers podcasts, originally begun in the second volume of this show, Digital Gonzo. The second solo outing for Captain America has already proved immensely popular and we focus on what a strong, lean, politically charged action thriller it is. Far now from the Nazi-punching Indiana Jones style adventure of The First Avenger and separated from the volatile super team of which he had to make his mark as a significant member, this time Steve Rogers is left all alone in a world he’s seven decades out of step with. As well as welcome newcomers Falcon and Winter Soldier we talk Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Maria Hill and how this advances and changes the Marvel Cinematic Universe leading up to Avengers: Age of Ultron. Our returning Avengers reviewers include Joshua Garrity of Cane and Rinse and Neil Taylor and Jerome McIntosh of GameBurst. This episode features spoilerific discussions on all the previous Marvel movies, including Thor: The Dark World. Be sure to find us, follow us, like us and email us. Digital Gonzo 156: Thor: The Dark World
Back with Avengers Phase 2, we have the second film in the series. This time, freed of his origin and following the events of the Avengers crossover, Thor is off on a world-spanning adventure to prevent some dark elf or other from bringing the universe to darkness and blah blah blah. The plot was surprisingly unimportant to the grander scheme of things. It’s just a series of visually stunning events conveyed with flair and humour, which just so happens to allow Thor to clash again with his father, relate to his mother, meet Jane again, look very pretty and intense and form an uneasy alliance with a newly freed Loki. All credit to Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston. They make for a fantastic pair of charismatic, warring onscreen presences and most of our podcast is spent discussing these two. As well as this there is a points of view section with community feedback on the film, a brilliant article written by Hiddleston himself prior to The Avengers and some extended chat on the continuation and expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Joining me are Sharon Shaw of Do try This at Home, Jerome McIntosh of GameBurst and David Merrett of Gonzo Planet’s Words of Merrett column. Next week, a preview of my first proper book, The Cartographer’s Handbook, which will be available on Kindle and audio in mid-December. http://traffic.libsyn.com/gonzogaming/156._Thor_-_The_Dark_World.mp3 Podcast: Play in new window |...
Digital Gonzo 154: Iron Man 3
After the deeply satisfying climax of Phase One, we are back to kick off Phase Two, starting here with this year’s Iron Man 3, followed next week by Thor: The Dark World, out in theaters now. Next year we’ll be back with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, then Guardians of the Galaxy and finally in 2015; Avengers: Age of Ultron. Back from the Phase One I am joined tonight by members of my original team; Neil Taylor and Jerome McIntosh of GameBurst and Joshua Garrity of Cane and Rinse. Now we have had a deluge of opinion on this movie, which itself has been rather divisive. Like Superman Returns, Man of Steel and Watchmen, Iron Man 3 provoked strong feeling from many people who were able to express them creatively in this ensemble piece. So this is another rather fascinating Dynamic Analysis, alternating essay material with round-table chat segments. See you in seven day for more Thor. Digital Gonzo 72: The Avengers
This is the sixth and final of the official MARVEL superhero movie reviews for now. In the future we will be returning to Marvel with reviews of the Spider-Man and X-Men film series’, and maybe a few of the others like Daredevil, 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Ang Lee’s Hulk. We will also be covering any subsequent movies from the Marvel cinematic universe including Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2 and the inevitable follow-up to The Avengers. But right now we’re focusing on this culmination of years of setup and expectation as The Avengers Assemble. This is actually the first ever Gonzo show I’ve recorded where myself, my guests and the rest of the world have only just seen the film in question for the first time. in fact it launches in the USA tonight. This makes for a slightly different discussion, not least because this is also the culmination of four years of waiting, longer if you’re a Marvel fan. It is also a new beginning for comic book movies and my theory is that in twenty years this will be seen as one of the first truly successful crossovers. Joining me once again are Neil Taylor of GameBurst and KDS 2.0, Josh Garrity of Cane and Rinse and Jerome McIntosh and Paul Gibson of Gonzo Planet. Some of the things we didn’t mention on the show that need mentioning… 1. The Helicarrier was awe-inspiring. 2. Black Widow did her fighting without high-heeled shoes again and in fact pointedly picked them up afterwards. 3. It would appear that the Americans get a brief post-credits Easter-Egg so stick around until the very end. That goes for this spoiler-packed podcast as well. In the next few days, the second Gonzo Planet Audio Magazine show, along with a very important announcement about the Gonzo Planetary Expo 2012. Then next week a whole new long-running film series gets reviewed. http://traffic.libsyn.com/gonzogaming/72._MARVEL_-_The_Avengers.mp3 Podcast: Play in new window |...
Digital Gonzo 71: Captain America – The First Avenger
This is the fifth of six reviews of the MARVEL cinematic universe. This show covers the not the first but certainly the finest cinematic outing for the star-spangled man with the shield.. This was another tough movie to make happen considering America’s relationship with war over the past decade. If they had gone too patriotic the rest of the world would have hated it, too down on America and the domestic box-office would suffer greatly. In the end the smartest thing to do was to put Steve Rogers in the context to which his character was created. The simpler times of the 1940s where heroes were lantern-jawed and villains were hideous and motivated only by hate. It could have been disastrous. It wasn’t. Find out more inside, true believers! Joining me once again are Neil Taylor of GameBurst and KDS 2.0, Josh Garrity of Cane and Rinse and Jerome McIntosh and Paul Gibson of Gonzo Planet. To finish off we also talk about some of the best and worst MARVEL video games out there as well as some wild speculation on what might happen in The Avengers that will seem dated within hours once people start seeing it. Neil and I also place a bet. We will be back next week, champing at the bit to talk about The Avengers. http://traffic.libsyn.com/gonzogaming/71._MARVEL_-_Captain_America_-_The_First_Avenger.mp3 Podcast: Play in new window |...
Digital Gonzo 70: Thor
This is the fourth of six reviews of the MARVEL cinematic universe. This show covers the 2011 first cinematic outing of the God of Thunder. This was a tough one for MARVEL. DC spent years developing the similarly magic-based superhero movie; Wonder Woman and ultimately stalled, ironically letting go the director of The Avengers. The rest of the established Marvels have their background in science, albeit fantastical science from the mind of dreamers. Thor has his basis in actual Norse mythology, given a space-age refreshing by Jack Kirby. The challenge was to sell modern cinema audiences this shining hero for the first time and make him every bit as believable as Iron Man. Joining me once again are Neil Taylor of GameBurst and KDS 2.0, Josh Garrity of Cane and Rinse and Jerome McIntosh and Paul Gibson of Gonzo Planet. We will be back next week with Captain America: The First Avenger. Here are some books that I heartily recommend you guys pick up for essential Avengers reading. The Ultimates Volume 1 – Superhuman The Ultimates Volume 2 – Homeland Security The Ultimates 2 Volume 1 – Gods and Monsters The Ultimates 2 Volume 2 – Grand Theft America The Avengers Volume 1 – Breakout Iron Man – Extremis (One last thing, we never mentioned the post-production addition of 3D for this film, which was truly phenomenal, totally justified, transformed the cinematic experience and totally changed my mind about the artless fad of enforced 3D in this medium.) http://traffic.libsyn.com/gonzogaming/70._MARVEL_-_Thor.mp3 Podcast: Play in new window |...
Digital Gonzo 69: Iron Man 2
This is the third of six reviews of the MARVEL cinematic universe. This show covers the 2010 sequel to Iron Man. The first film was a huge success, but with The Dark Knight, expectations were driven far higher, both in terms of box office and critical success. This led to a hell of a lot of people being incredibly disappointed with iron Man 2. In this show, we defend the most maligned of the five MARVEL’s whilst clearly defining its lazier, sloppier moments. We highlight it’s strengths and the intelligence and heart at the core. And of course there is the matter of Scarlett Johansson. Joining me once again are Neil Taylor of GameBurst and KDS 2.0, Josh Garrity of Cane and Rinse and Jerome McIntosh and Paul Gibson of Gonzo Planet. We will be back in just a few days time with Thor. http://traffic.libsyn.com/gonzogaming/69._MARVEL_-_Iron_Man_2.mp3 Podcast: Play in new window |...
Digital Gonzo 68: The Incredible Hulk
This is the second of six reviews of the MARVEL cinematic universe. This show covers the 2008 Requel (a portmanteau of both Sequel and Reboot) of The Incredible Hulk. This is a character who has been rendered onscreen many many times and unlike Iron Man, was not only fully formed in the minds of the public but had received a theatrical outing already. Marvel’s job with this film was to deliver something more fun than 2003’s HULK, directed by Ang Lee (now officially a parallel universe one-shot, what-if origin story), as well as setting up an ongoing character that would tie into The Avengers and future films. Joining me once again are Neil Taylor of GameBurst and KDS 2.0 and Jerome McIntosh and Paul Gibson of Gonzo Planet. We will be back in just a few days time with Iron Man 2. http://traffic.libsyn.com/gonzogaming/68._MARVEL_-_The_Incredible_Hulk.mp3 Podcast: Play in new window |...
Digital Gonzo 67: Iron Man
This is the first of six reviews of the MARVEL cinematic universe. Each one will cover a different movie in the run-up to The UK theatrical release of The Avengers, which will be the sixth and final part for the time being. 1. Iron Man (2008) 2. The Incredible Hulk (2008) 3. Iron Man 2 (2010) 4. Thor (2011) 5. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) 6. The Avengers (2012) This first show covers Iron Man, arguably the best of the released movies so far. A critical and box-office high for Robert Downey Junior and director John Favreau and the beginning of a new renaissance of Marvel comic book adaptations. Joining me on the S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier to cast a critical eye over proceedings are Neil Taylor of GameBurst and KDS 2.0, Joshua Garrity of Cane and Rinse and Jerome McIntosh and Paul Gibson of Gonzo Planet. http://traffic.libsyn.com/gonzogaming/67._MARVEL_-_Iron_Man.mp3 Podcast: Play in new window |...
